What a great weekend I had at Hurricane Who!
Sorry I've been quiet for a while, but its been a very busy few weeks, with preparations for this week's highly successful first event for Who York - An Evening with Louise Jameson, work, and having a fantastic time this past weekend in Orlando for the inaugural Hurricane Who convention! They've announced year 2 of this convention, and its now a fixture in my calendar, and you would do well to do the same!
What made it so good? Well, the undoubted highlight was Toby Hadoke's performance of his masterpiece - "Moths ate my Doctor Who Scarf". This is a spectacular show, which gets better every time I see it. And this performance was so tight and perfectly timed it moved me even more than it has before. If you have never seen it, and cannot get to one of the last few performances, such as that at SFX next year, then please download the CD from iTunes, Audible or Amazon UK. I promise that you will not regret it! And its appeal crosses over from Doctor Who fans, to anyone who has ever felt out of place and alone in the world. Its a work of genius.
The weekend also featured a pool party on Friday night, with an inflatable Dalek! What other convention can you have that event take place? Certainly not at Thanksgiving in Chicago (fun as that is too - just a lot chillier!) And then there were the delightful guests, led by the incomparable and wonderful Ms Louise Jameson, and the entertaining Mr Gareth David Lloyd, who were absolutely tireless all weekend, and always smiling! They were joined by Colin Spaull, who was an absolute treasure - and regaled us with tales of working on both the old and new series of Doctor Who and many other exploits over the years, and a great quartet of writing talent - Rob Shearman, Tony Lee, Simon Guerrier, and Nigel Fairs.
As if that wasn't enough, the creators of Torchwood Babiez were on hand, alongside with Jason Haigh-Ellery from Big Finish, and Steve Roberts from the restoration team, who brought snippets of the re-colored "The Mind of Evil"! Oh and DWNY performed, not one, but (due to popular demand from both guests and attendees) two editions of Just a DWNY Minute, featuring Toby Hadoke, Nigel Fairs, Colin Spaull, Tony Lee and more!!!!
I got to meet a wide variety of fans, young and old. And also got to explain to a dog groomer (yes - there was a dog groomers convention in the hotel on the same weekend!) at the bar, that the young man she thought bore a striking resemblance to the "gorgeous guy on that show Torchwood", really really really was Mr Gareth David Lloyd himself!!!!! (She didn't watch Doctor Who, but her mother loved it!) Yes, it was that kind of weekend!
Was it flawless? Absolutely not. The hotel left a lot to be desired, especially in the food department, and some of the spaces could have been laid out better (especially the dealer's room). And a few of the panels seemed repeated once to often. But this was a first year convention! And you would never have guessed. The programming was, by and large, well put together. The atmosphere was very relaxed. The guests all seemed to be having a good time, and were very friendly and happy to chat and get a drink together. Lots of people were in costume. And just about everyone I spoke to (and I spoke to and hung out with a LOT of different people and interacted with them on a number of panels) seemed to be enjoying themselves and were delighted to be celebrating the show we love together!
I have great confidence that next year will be even better, with Colin Baker and Frazer Hines already confirmed! Tickets are on sale now for under $50 for the entire weekend!
