Beginnings and Endings

Please Note: There will be spoilers in this blog entry if you haven't seen the UK press in the last week, or the reports out of San Diego Comic-Con.

The last week has been a fantastic time to be a Doctor Who fan - and the proof of how great this show is, could be seen in the thousands of screaming fans in San Diego yesterday morning, as the celebrated the coming end of an era - And what a ride that ending looks like its going to be. Frights on Mars with water and who knows what else, and then "The End of Time" itself, with Wilf, Donna, the Master, Timothy Dalton and the last days of Planet Earth!!!! It all looks very dark indeed! Whatever happened to Russell's promise not to scare the kids on Christmas Day??!!!!

And as we bid farewell to the amazing work that RTD, Julie Gardner, David Tennant and the rest of their fabulous team, back in Cardiff, the Matt Smith era has begun in earnest with the unveiling of the Doctor in his new togs, along with his new companion, Amy Pond, and as if that wasn't excitng enough we get a brand new (well, old really) TARDIS exterior, and the return of a character we hoped to see again, but didn't know if we would - River Song! How marvellous!

I love the new costume. Its a wonderful mix of an old and new - leading me to believe very strongly that Moffat will be re-introducing aspects of his beloved 5th Doctor era, especially the idea of  an old man in a young man's body, which this costume completely befits. I can't wait to see it, and the whole new team, in action!

A warm welcome to Barnaby Edwards, President of DWNY (Doctor Who New York) who is now blogging here with us. It is a great honour to have Barnabeee here at the Gallifreyan Embassy sharing his insights and observations of the ins and outs of Doctor Who.

I agree with you here, the SDCC Doctor Who panel on Sunday morning was incredible. I still don't think the panelists could believe the number of people there. I think it should be noted that the Doctor Who panel with David Tennant, Russell T Davies, Euros Lyn and Julie Gardner was hosted in the biggest room in operation on Sunday (Hall H holds about 6,500 people but is not used on Sunday at SDCC). Not sure how many people Ballroom 20 holds, but it must be between 4,000 and 5,000. This room was bigger than the Smallville panel and the Supernatural panel that were running that same morning.

This is a great compliment as to how popular Dr Who has become in America.

I wanted to say a heartfelt "Thanks!" for your excellent comments in this blog entry. It is a truly a great time to be a DOCTOR WHO fan, and it's a pity so many fans of the series don't seem to realize it. The show is more popular than it's ever been, with a great creative team gearing up for what figures to be an unforgettable farewell and an excellent new team off and running with an exciting, intriguing new season.

I agree that Smith's look is perfect for the Doctor! When I saw those first photos leaked online, I couldn't have been happier with the stylistic and sartorial direction the new production team was taking. Can't wait to see the "school teacher" Doctor in action!

Finally, kudos for not mentioning TORCHWOOD once in this blog. I have no beef with that show or its cast & crew, but I was getting a bit tired of so much bandwidth being dedicated to the KNOTS LANDING of the WHO canon.
